First, the question assumes some criteria to rate or define "hero." I believe a hero to be someone who sacrifices personal interest for the sake of others through a pure motive and belief in a just cause. Since you add the word "great" to the question, it follows that they would have to had a great effect upon the USA. Abraham Lincoln, Robert E. Lee, Ronald Reagan, FDR or other figures would be worth strong consideration.

I think George Washington is a runaway winner. Here is why: He had everything to lose by taking part in the American Revolution to the extent he did. He was already a successful farmer and attained wealth, and his personal fortune and family were hurt dramatically by his devotion to the cause. He served well beyond what was required, even expected, spending his own money, suffering personal health problems and at the cost of personal relationships. He remained devoted to the war effort and actually turned the hearts and mind of the soilders, citizens and politiicans towards a unified goal. While someone like Lincoln or FDR persevered through great hardship, they inherited FROM WASHINGTON a great system that allowed them to protect what was there. Only Washington built this system and made events (battles, decisions as President, appointments) that no one else had ever done. He readied the country for war, won an 8 year war with the British, built a government, kept his morals, and surrendered power when the position of king was available to him. Only he stands out amongst that generation, indeed all American generations, as the GREAT HERO of our country, and it was through this devotion to others and leadership that he became "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his countrymen." Many Americans have forgotten his accomplishments and sacrifice, but it stands above all others.

There are several to chose from, it's all a matter of perspective. Most would say George Washington for leading us to independence. Others would say the entire Continental Congress for having the fortitude to continue on with their plans even when the british were searching to capture them.

I myself believe Abraham Lincoln to be the great hero. He was thrust into the midst of a Civil War that he had no real part in causing. He lead the country through the war and kept the Union together, while also freeing the slaves. No one, other then the soldiers themselves, had a harder time during that period. Then for all his efforts, he was shot and killed less then a week after General Robert E. Lee surrendered.

I'd have to say Martin Luther King, Jr. I say that he is the great hero because he wasn't trying to run for office or get any sort of political glory. He seemed only to be interested in equality for everyone. Because he never tried to run for office or anything like that, I feel like every word of his "I Have A Dream" speech came straight from the heart, rather than being just a calculated, sentimental speech that we've come to expect from politicians these days. Because he seemed to have no other motives than equality and justice for all of us, I think he's the big hero of our country.

There is no one great hero. It took a collaborative effort for many things.
