After 1 year, the value is 12000 - 3000 = 9000

After 2 years, the value is 9000 - 2250 = 6750

After 3 years, the value will be 6750 - 1687.5 = 5062.5

This could have been written as

12000 X 0.75^3 or 12000 X 0.75 X 0.75 X 0.75

it just means the vans value decreses by 25% each year.

25% of 12,000 is (12000/100) * 25 = 3000.
12000 - 3000 = 9000 this is the value after the first yr.

now there are two types of depreciation - straight line, or reduction. one type is where 25% of 12000 (so 3000) is just subtracted from the vans value each year, the other type is where 25% of the vans price each year is subtracted, altho i cannot remember which is which type.

as this is a maths question i assume it is the latter type.

so after 1 yr the vans value is 9000.

(9000/100) * 25 = 2250 (25% of van value, 9000, after 1 yr)
9000-2250 = 6750 (value after 2 yrs)

(6750/100)*25 = 1687.5
6750 - 1687.5 = 5062.5 is the value after 3 yrs.

van price=12000
End of first year the van value=12000-12000x25/100
=12000-3000
=9000
End of second year the van value=9000-9000x25/100
=9000-2250
=6750
end of third year=6750-6750x25/100
=6750-1675
5075

=12000* (1- 0.25)^3
= 5062.5
