Hmmm lets see...the Light Saber is a laser sword that can cut through anything and slice off limbs without any loss of blood by the victim...while the Death Star can emit a huge laser beam and detroy entire plantes in less than 5 seconds. All the fighter ships shot laser beams...good guy lasers are always green and bad guy lasers are red. Therefore, you always know who is attacking you (with exception of the Death Star's laser beam) I say LASERS are the best intergalactic weapons of choice!

There are no weapons in space. Either that or space is full of weapons. It depends on your political bias.

Here are the facts.

1) There are no actual weapons in space. No warheads, no lasers or beam weapons. Nothing. There never were. Some killer satellites have been tested, most recently by the Chinese, but the test destroys the killer satellite along with the target satellite, so none of those satellites have been in space long and none are there now.

2) There are many military satellites in space. Spy satellites, communication satellites, weather satellites, navigation satellites. GPS is a satellite based U.S. military navigation system that has been made available for use by the whole world.

3) Space started out as a military enterprise and remains so. The U.S. military spends far more money on space activities than NASA does, but most of it is secret so we never hear about it. This has been true since the day NASA was formed, and even before that, all the way back to the rocket experiments of the 1940s.

4) ICBMs, if launched, would fly to their targets through space. The only difference between an ICBM and a satellite launcher is replacing the warhead with a satellite and burning the rocket engines about 5% longer to reach orbit. But no ICBM is based in space. They are all on the ground.

Now, is this good? It depends on your politics. But anyone who thinks human activity in space will be, or should be, or even could be more peaceful than human activity on Earth, is being naive.

Wouldn't it be better to go out with the latest that technology has to offer? How can you put a price on that?
You want to have a rope tossed over a tree limb?
How can weapons in space be a bad thing?
It would be more humane, less discriminatory, more politically correct, more efficient in a get-the-job-done kind of way.
If we could have wiped out Afghanistan or Iraq and just started over, you think the terrorists would be messing with us still?
We talk big, but we don't back it up.
Who's afraid of tanks? The air force hasn't turned any tides.
What difference does it make how many of those we throw at them?
This is a new world war order. Conventional doesn't cut it.
What's the point of worrying about WMD's if we don't use them first? Let them worry for a change.
Nobody's standing up to us now.
Our military techniques are outdated. We are trying to swat flies with boulders.
Time to get out the Raid.
Think we'd have any more collateral loss?

We "civilized" people of the world should be using our mind and energy to create a world of love, peace, health, and a good life for all. It is sheer madness to think about more weapons whether in space, land or sea. I read where the Russians have just successfully launch a new rocket that can penetrate any defense system. Think of all the money and resources wasted for this nonsense. Now we will have to develop a better weapon and defense system. Weapons in space can be shot down just like airplanes. Every war in history could have been prevented.

Weapons are already in space if you know where to look. The first equation, or just about the first one, anyone learns in physics class is F=ma. So, along the lines of Heinlein's The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, just throw moon rocks at each other. In reality, the shuttle comes back all the time with cracks and major scratches on its hull and windows from projectiles no bigger than paint flecks. It doesn't take a huge object, when given enough acceleration, to cause sever damage.

If we are to colonize space, we must bring tools to space. Some of them will be so heavy duty, that they will be considered as weapon. Melting asteroid for habitation or mining will require some kind of space dynamite.
Depend on how people use the weapon it can be both good or bad. Anyway, there can be no order without military, and if we want order in space, there have to be both weapon and ethic in space.

I think that the point is moot because if the government doesn't take weapons into space how will they ever be able to police outer space when people start to set up there own little frontier colonies where the only law is whoever is in charge.

Like the treaty that bans them, but it is academic, because both USA Russia and possibly China can fill space with satellites carrying thousands of MRV.

it depends on what they are going to be used for, if they are going to be used to defend the earth from intruders ie metorites and other things that may cause a threat to human civilisation, then yes it is a good thing, but if it is to kill people and attack countries, then no this is a bad and pointless idea.

Why spend half a billion dollars to get into orbit and kill one another when it's so much cheaper to do it here.
