My college fraternity made all the pledges go thru 3 month normal pledge period before they could become active members. We had to do a few things that were a bit humiliating, but never in eyes of public, and never physically abusive (like paddling pledges as some rival frats did). During "Hell Week" pledges had to live in basement of fraternity house when they weren't attending classes or working, We also weren't allowed to sleep without permission .... getting caught meant risking being voted out. I was awake 78 hours before they let us take a 3 hour nap ...... so most us guys were like walking zombies by then. But I had many good times & made several very close friends during my college days, so I never regretted joining.

Things have changed a lot since then, as now all types of hazing are strictly forbidden, and some greek organizations are actually required by their college to be "dry" or risk losing their charter.
