I'm 17 weeks pregnant and i just had my B12 tested b/c I was deficient and have taken B12 shots before. (around 5 years ago) My results just came back & it was 147. normal is 220-1100. I've looked online & it said that if you were deficient you should take folic acid & folate...I've been taking my prenatal vitamins since week 4... so does this mean it was lower that that? It also said that it could cause neurological defects in the baby. My dr is at lunch and I have to call back at 3pm est. Is this something that I should worry about because right now my nerves are shot and will be until I speak with the dr. Anyone else been through this? I also had the AFP test done but the results aren't back yet...now I'm scared about the results because of my B12 results.

What you want to hear is one of us tell you that everything is fine, there is nothing any of us can do about the worry you are feeling. Nearly all women get pregnant while nutritionally deficient and most babies are born fine, the odds are that everything will be okay. Your body robs itself for the baby, so any folic acid or B12 you did have, the baby got. Even if you didn't have the B12 issue, you would have thought of reasons to worry, that's pregnancy. The best thing to do is to try not to let yourself worry about anything you cannot deal with right now. This includes tests to come or results to come, whether you will have enough money for college, all of it. Keep a list of stuff you worry about, and write down one quick idea on how to fix it, then stop thinking about it. 40 weeks is a LOOOOONG TIME when you worry (we all do it and we all know what you are feeling). The worry doesn't get better after pregnancy, it gets worse, you worry if the baby is breathing, if he/she is smart enough, if you listened to enough Mozart and Beethoven today, everything. Parenthood is an exercise in insanity but you will get through it. Try a nap, a movie or a video game (probably won't help all that much but at least you won't be sitting there working yourself up too much). Best wishes and good luck.

well, I've lost a baby from nural tube defects. our baby was born on her due date, and passed 3 days from a brain tumor. we don't know what caused this. but from the studing i've done it may have something to do with foloic acid. usually around now, your doc could have you get a level 2 ultrasound though, and check for all those things. I think it's really something you need to ask your doc, and maybe suggest an ultrasound for all of your piece of mind. if your doc shows he/she isn't concerned, I would really push it to get the utrasound. I really hope things turn out for you. I know how scary these things can be. I'm pregnant right now at 27 weeks. if you need to talk you can email me any time. tabaky69@yahoo.com
