I served in the Irish Defence Forces for over 21 years, 174 days, including time in the Lebanon with U.N.I.F.I.L. the
(United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon).
I would say the over 95% of any military force are made up of people who feel they are doing service for the Defense of their country (I am here talking about legitimate armies of countries, and not the rag-tag misfits who emerge out of the slime as we see around the world when a country has a civil war.)
Most people do not have a desire to kill other human beings, if we did there would be more people being killed every day, the cold-blooded killer is a rare animal amongst the human race, a mental throw backs to more primative times.
If soldiers just wanted to kill, then it would not be possible to control them even on their own country.
I have spoken to military veterans who said that pulling the trigger and taking the life of a fellow human being was the hardest decison they ever had to take, some people just cant do it, even though their lives and the lives of their friends were on the line.
One veteran told me that when you start to "like killing!" then you have a problem, what are you good for when the war is over? Who then will be your enemy.
Obviously the desire to stay alive in a combat zone and the more contact made with the enemy will impove the soldiers performance, but you never know when it could be your turn to be hit, to die, or be seriously wounded.

Probably not, I was in the old citizen Army (you know that one with a draft in which everyone had to serve) and served in Vietnam and I seldom saw anyone who was not upset at having to kill people.

Some people are willing to put themselves in harms way to protect others. Sometimes it requires killing the enemy. It's nothing more than that. There's no joy or sorrow, it's just something that had to be done.

no ... from talking to ppl and reading it seems that most ppl who go to war dont know what they want to do in life yet ... some ppl also dont realize just how hard it is to kill a human being until its a life or death matter for themselves
