definition:
Freedom of speech is the concept of being able to speak freely without censorship.

freedom on Y! ?
yes, you can write down whatever you want, but how long it will stay on?

- there is no need to be rude: everything can be said in the nice way
- being offensive does not help
- lot of people do think so, they are afraid to speak open, they prefer to write down and feel superior that way
- they do not care who is on other side, they just have to spill their hate........that way they feel stronger

these people do not mind about others, they have to spread their opinions ( usually not acceptable by others). nobody gives them attention in their lives and they need it badly. they need space somewhere to express themselves and they find it here.incognito !!that gives them extra power!
it is like disease. no cure....

Freedom of Speech on Yahoo Answers is a paradox.

I just received a "violation" notice. It wasn't because I used bad words or violated the guidelines. It was because I had an opinion that someone else didn't agree to.

So to answer your questions, yes you can be rude, offensive, portray evil, hatred and bash everyone regardless of color, race, gender, and nationality. All it takes is for one person to become upset to have either the question or answer deleted. Freedom of Speech is not a guarantee here. It is an opinion forum. If you don't like them (it) then flag them. It is an imperfect system for an imperfect world.

Yes- Freedom of speech means you have the right to say what you want, lie or not. The part people get caught up in, is that the freedom of speech does NOT mean you don't have to take responsibility for what you say. All of our actions have consequences, as they should. I have the right to tell you a lie- whatever the consequences of that lie are, I have to accept. Therefor, you should always think before you speak- you have the right to say whatever it is- but do you want to take the fall-out from it?

Sorry. I have to disagree with you. A person should have the freedom to express hate. You may not like it, and they may even insult you, just don't make them stop. Why not? Hate is a condition of the heart. Expressing it through speech is only an outlet. By letting them express it and then choosing not to let it hurt you, you will do more to blunt the effects of hate than any form of censorship can. You can force them to shut up, but they still hate in their heart. Kind words back to them will hurt them worse than anything else.

However, we do not have freedom of speech on YA, so this question is moot to an extent. This is run by a company that can set the terms of use as it sees fit. Often, I disagree with how Yahoo does that, but it is their prerogative.

This is a great topic that I was just discussing this morning. Freedom of speech is great. However, when people abuse freedom of speech, it becomes a problem. The same way people abuse food and become unhealthy or get high on over the counter drugs; people who maliciously spread hate, racism, or lude comments to degrade others, are abusing the freedom of speech that has meant so much to humanity. Expression of ones self embraces our very being and individuality. Please be responsible with your freedom of speech.

People here in America and other places in the world do have freedom of speech. They should be able to express themselves freely whether we, or others agree with them or not.
But I too, as do each of us, have other basic rights like not having to be bombarded with the racism, hatred, rudeness, offensiveness or belittling that so often comes our way. I have heard, "Well if you don't like it, leave" and that's my point if they don't like what we do, believe or the color of our skin or our religion then they can leave. They have that right. Leave us alone, we both will be happier.

we dont really have one. yes yes all the things you've said is true. no one can walk in an airport and scream "i have a gun...etc." its common sense not to do that. but we really dont have a freedom of speech in the USA at school, you cant say anything bad to teachers or other students. same goes for work and everywhere else. people go to jail for saying whats on their mind. it sucks how in the bill of rights it says we have a freedom of speech but we still cant really say what we want to say with out getting in trouble. but. its life. and there are some really ignorant people who will say really dangerous things and scare everyone. our country would be chaotic if we really had a freedom of speech. -- maybe. thats my opinion--. :]

Rude and offensive are very subjective. (For example, I sometimes think I'm being sarcastic; others might be offended by my "sense of humor".)
Being racist, sexist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic, simply hateful are a whole other thing!
Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion(s). And it's more than possible to express those without resorting to racism, sexism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, stereotyping. It "just" takes a little more thought and imagination, however, and I think a lot of people are simply too lazy to make the effort.
