1) To get the reader interested in the story before the rising action takes place.

2) To introduce readers to various charcaters to see who we will like and not like in the story

3) To provide background information of the protagonists/antagonists so we can understand the motives behind what they say and how they act in the main situation of the story.

All these purposes can/should be found in the novel's first chappie.

an appetizer begins to stimulate the senses. Creates hunger. An introduction may explain the links from conception to publication, It may involve more intimately the reader in the writing and attempt to humanize the subject and the author. If as an author if I personalize my story by having a friend or another celebrity write the introduction the book is validated right away sand the reader will get a better feel or understanding of my quest.
