Because they are stupid. You realy don't love your country if you are going to let illegals in.

Why shouldn't borders be open? And if you're going to say national security, think again. How many Mexican terrorists have there been? Or Canadians? Or Guatemalans? We don't exactly have hostile neighboring countries. I'm more affraid of the native US population as far as national security goes.
And if your reasons are economic, think again. Baby boomers are about to go into mass retirement. Who will pick up the slack in the US economy, with the added need for more nurses, care givers, doctors? Those are specialized fields (with good reason), but when health care and insurance costs are already extremely high who's going to be able to afford retirement? Think negative population growth. We could be looking at it in less than 20 years.
I have yet to hear a coherent reason why we shouldn't allow more immigration. As for the illegals, why is amnesty a problem, if they can prove that they are here to work? (Obviously drugs and gangs are a seperate problem, and they are reason enough for increased border security, but it doesn't fly as a reason to keep out the productive workers that want to come to the US.)
They aren't stealing jobs, they aren't draining our healthcare system or our education system. It's been studied. Since they are willing to work for minimum wage, etc, they add far more to our economy than they detract. (Can you tell I studied econ. and finance?)

No other country in the world has an open border, and the idea of one is just ridiculous, but - yes - those in opposition are, wrongly, called racist. I suppose that people simply can't see that needing to exercise control over who enters the country, and for what reason, is much different from racism.

I think a lot of liberals want to close the borders as much as the Republicans. Remember, it's Bush's plan to create a "guest worker" program that will continue the indentured servitude and can be called racist.
The Dems are generally for protecting American jobs and having compassion for the illegals that are in the country at this time.

Well, considering how many dollars are going to be spent on this fence, I'd would call them frivolous rather than racist. They're going to find a way into the country anyway, and this is just like throwing a rock to stop the pacific ocean. If we allow for easier green cards and citizenship, we will have more taxpayers for the country to pay for things like education and health care, things we can all use, rather than a huge, eye sore fence along our Mexican border.

They would rather let illegals in, because they will eventually vote for those liberals.
