I have a black walnut tree in front of my yard, the only sign I see is when the fruit which holds the nut start to come out. They start like little green apples, they make a mess but the squirrels in the neighborhood love them.

Walnut trees usually leaf and flower in april. He may have missed it (?) My grandad (and his neighbors) collected gunny sacks full of walnuts in southern Minnesota. He put them through a corn cob husker (which removes corn kernals from field corn) to remove the outer skin. Then he laid the nuts out on the cement open porch inside a 2x4 frame. He hosed them to remove the stain, and left them in the sun for a week or more. Then he stored them in upstairs bedroom (spread out on the wood floor) . He brought pails of them downstairs and cracked them all winter in front of the The Price is Right. We always got bags of black walnuts for Christmas, bless his heart! Don't be sorry, you are fortunate to have a curious grandfather in law!
