I had a chimney fire a couple of months ago and there was soot all over my home. I found a product at Lowes called Krud Kutter that when used straight cut right through it. It is inexpensive and when diluted, I've used it successfully on other tough cleaning projects like the BBQ grill.

I agree that TSP is absolutely the best cleaner for this job. You find it in the painting section of a home store, or in a hardware store. Sometimes they sell TSP substitute, which is also good. Wear gloves when you use it because it can irritate your skin. Have 2 pails of water -- one with the cleaning mixture and one with plain water. Wet your sponge or rag with the TSP solution, wipe an area of wall, and then rinse the cloth. That way you won't get as much greasy dirt in your cleaning pail.

Wash the walls with dish soap and water if it is heavy. If it is light use a Mr. Clean eraser. Rise, and let dry. Buy some Kilz paint. It will cover the smell and give you a white base primer for your regular paint. Read the label on the Kilz paint for best directions. This is the same stuff contractors use to refurbish homes and businesses from smoke damage and water damage.

Go to paint store and get TSP ( its a wall cleaner for paint). Prime the wall before you paint.

This happened to me and the only thing was to repaint using "Kiltz" first.
Kiltz hides anything!! From stubborn water spots to "Soot" stains ;)
