Believe it or not popping the question only happens in the movies. Usually most couples talk about marriage way before a proposal is made. Though a guy is free to be a little creative with the actual delivery. What you should do is start with an innocent type question like, "did you ever think about what it would be like to be married? " or "what kind of girl do you think you would marry?". If he questions you whether you are talking about you and him you say no, it is hypothetical. He will believe you. Then later on (few days or next week) you can start being a little more specific like, "What do you think it would be like if we were married?" After that (few more days, weeks whatever) you can say something like, "I'm not in a rush but I want to see this relationship moving forward." Talking like this prepares a man for what it is you want and expect without being overly pushy or demanding. Slowely you can express what you want and then listen (no really listen) to what he expects and wants. Then you can start to work out the details and leave it to him to be a little creative as to the timing. You have to be reasonable. If you want to be married in two years, tell him that when the time is right. Also during the engagement period really spend a lot of time talking about where you will live, work, kids, religion, who will do what how to spend the money. Just take it slow and easy, no fighting. I also recommend going to pre marital counciling through whatever religious orginization you are with.

Good Luck!

It's fine if you want to ask if he sees that in the future for the two of you...but if you ask him to ask you to marry him, you might as well just have done the asking (him to marry you) yourself.

You didn't say how long dating. "A while" could mean weeks, months, or years. If it's been less than a year, I wouldn't start pushing for marriage just yet.

How long is "a while"?

I would ask about what he wants out of the relationship, but asking him to propose is a bit much. Is sounds like you are still in early stages of the relationship...otherwise you both would know what the other one wanted and if you two should even be together.

Been in your place, brought it up. It does more harm than good. Since he's not ready, it will make him feel pressured and your relationship will change in a bad way. If he was ready he would have asked.

Sure! Just do it in a round about way, like buy a bridal magazine and leave it on the counter. Men like to believe they were the ones who made the decision.

It's the 21st century girl if you're gonna ask him to ask you then you might as well just pop the question yourself...
