completing the square

x² - 17x = - 10x - 6

x² - 17x + 10x = - 10x - 6 + 10x

x² - 7x = - 6

x² - 7x+ ______= - 6 + ______

x² - 7x + 49/4 = - 6 + 49/4

(x - 7/2)(x - 7/2) = - 24/4 + 49/4

(x - 7/2)² = 25/4

(√x - 7/2)² = ± √25 / √4

x - 7/2 = ± 5/2

x - 7/2 + 7/2 = 7/2 ± 5/2

x = 7/2 ± 5/2

- - - - - - - - -

Solving for +

x = 7/2 + 5/2

x = 12 / 2

x = 6

- - - - - - - -

Solving for -

x = 7/2 - 5/2

x = 2/2

x = 1

- - - - - - - -s-

x^2-17x= -10x-6
=> x^2-17x+10x= -6
=> x^2-7x= -6
=>(x)^2-2*x*7/2+(7/2)^2= -6+49/4 [adding (7/2)^2 or 49/4 to both sides]
=> (x-7/2)^2=25/4
=>x-7/2=+-5/2 [square-rooting both sides]
=>x=7/2+-5/2
x=6 or 1 ans

x^2 - 17x = -10x - 6
x^2 -17x + 10x = -10x +10x -6 (add 10x to both sides)
x^2 -7x = -6
x^2 -7x + 6 = -6 +6 (add 6 to both sides)
x^2 -7x +6 = 0
(x-6)(x-1) = 0 (find the 2 factors of 6 that add to -7)
factors of 6 = 3*2/ -3*-2/6*1/-6*-1/
solve both for x
x= 6, x=1
Math is fun !!!
