Spaceships that look like buck rogers, with dials and gauges and switches, instead of buttons and L.C.D. screens and remote analog controllers.

Buck Rogers came out around 1928 in the magazine Amazing Stories but didn't get the retro 50's feel till the 50's when the series because very popular with the younger generation of that era.

First, wasn't Buck Rogers from the 80's?

Second, technologically, we are already still stuck in the 50's.

The shuttles that we go into orbit in haven't improved much since then. They are still extremely fragile as a piece of dust travelling at a high speed can go through a shuttle like a bullet, and there is still no protection from dangerous cosmic rays. My biggest problem is that we are still using rocket fuel when it's obvious that you can't even carry enough gas in the tank to go anywhere outside of our own back yard.

As far as the look of the shuttles, I could care less how they look if they actually worked well.

Agree with what your saying. It seems the imagination has become to pragmatic. There was one PBS show that dared to dream as space ships built in space as big as planets got discussed, and the possibility of traveling close to speed of light.
