If player/manager future hall of famer Joe Torre was to bet on the Yankees after swearing and signing under oath that he would not was to get caught betting on baseball would you forgive him? No!
Is it ok if Willie Randolph was to bet on the game? No!
In fact let's just let all the managers bet on the game and forgive them later down the road. I don't think so.
What makes Pete Rose so damn special that we should forgive him?

Pete Rose's answers to betting on the game.
"Yes sir, I did bet on baseball,"
Asked how often, he replied, "Four or five times a week.
When asked why, Rose responded, "I didn't think I'd get caught.
No way this idiot get in.

DubsBoy? Are you stupid. Jordan and Barkely did not bet on basketball. They bet on golf with friends and associates. There's a huge difference.

eddie m? Are you missing the point?
Torre is a ex-player/manager. Pete Rose was the same when he betted on the game. He was a player manager for a little while then he became a full time manager.

You people keep mentioning all these records. Maybe Pete should have thought about that prior to betting on the game. YOU THINK! Obviously money meant more to him than the game.

The point that seems to keep getting looked over is if we let Pete get away with gambling on the game why not let everyone get away with it. Well we won't. This is his last shot and I don't see the banned being lifted to let this loser in.

blott2319? Maybe you should look up Joe Torre's stats before making tha dumba@@ comment. Between his stats as a player and his 4 world serries rings an multiple division titles he will more than likely get into the hall unlike loser Pete Rose.

Thank You!! Unfortunately however there are a great many idiots in Yahoo Answers who just can't seem to connect the dots. It's pretty clear to you and it's pretty clear to me, so why can't others see it? I guess you can tell I'm no Pete Rose fan.

All-time outs leaders
(using outs == AB + caught steals + sac flies + sac bunts - hits)
Rose 10081
Aaron 8808
Yaz 8803
Yep, that's an edge of more than 0-for-1200 that Rose holds over the next two guys -- essentially zero for two seasons.
That's the price Rose made his teams pay for his getting the hits record.
He'd have been a HOFer even without passing Cobb, and he would be today except that, by Hall rules, he is not eligible for consideration, and it has nothing to do with his playing performance (or with his managing performance, though as a manager he's clearly not Hall measure).
Winning election to the Hall (which he never will) is the LAST item on the Pete Rose Total Reformation checklist. It is not the first item. That one -- admission -- is, to date, the only item checked off.
----------
PS. If one does not care that Rose bet on baseball, including on his own team (to win or to lose is irrelevant), one has no respect for baseball, and may as well turn to something like "professional" "wrestling" where everyone knows the outcomes are scripted.
Betting is bad for the game; betting threatens the game. I'd much rather have baseball ongoing than have Rose still around.
Giamatti cared for the game. Rose did not.

A manager betting on games is far worse a crime than a mere player because a manager can influence the outcome of games ,seasons and championships thereby compromising the integrity of the game itself.
Let's say the reasons that the beloved Yankee's suck so far this year is not because they have bad pitching , but because Joe Torre managed to get himself in too deep with the Brooklyn wise -guys and the only way that he can settle the debt and keep is family alive is to have the beloved Yankee's lose games and the Red Sox win.
Far fetched ? Not at all. In fact that is the reason behind baseball's strict prohibition on gambling.

Well, it's pretty simple. Pete Rose deserves to be put in the Hall of Fame for his dominate performance as a player. He bet as a manager, and therefore should be banned from the game, but this doesn't affect what he did on the field. No one is advocating forgiveness, or encouraging other managers to bet, we are merely saying the Hall of "Fame" is not complete without one of it's most "famous" players. If another manager were to bet on the game they would be banished from the game and be inelligible to enter the Hall as a manager, but it's not forgiveness when you let someone enter based on their performance prior to the mis-step.
Let me reiterate one point I just made...it is the called the "Hall of Fame", not the "Hall of Nice guys who played well and never broke any rules ever in their entire lives". The mere fact that you have so many people rushing to chime in on this question proves just how FAMOUS Rose is to this very day.
By the way, I seriously doubt Torre would ever enter based on his performance as a player so your argument is a bit flawed.
***Note I said AS A PLAYER. You're great at insulting people, but lousy at making a legitimate argument. Believe me I think Torre is Hall of Fame material, but only for what he has done AS A COACH. Way to pick out the one part of my answer, and not even address the majority of my argument. I think you belong in the "Hall of Ignorants", because you hate Pete Rose so much you aren't even able to listen to a coherent person that disagrees with you.
P.S.
The concept of Yahoo Answers is to ask a question you don't have an answer to and get some feedback from others who might know. It is not a forum for you to post your opinionated statements in order to have your back patted by people who agree with you, and for you to berate those that disagree.

Joe Torre and Willie Randolph don't even compare to Pete Rose. Joe Torre is a terrible coach!
Here are some reasons why he should be in the hall of fame. These are records of all time for major league baseball. He holds 19 of them.
1. 4256 hits. Number 1 of all-time. Pete has 65 more hits than Ty Cobb who is in the Hall of Fame.
2. 10 seasons with 200 or more hits
3. 3215 singles. Wade Boggs who is in the Hall of Fame had 3,010 hits total.
4. 746 doubles which is number 1 of all time
5. 10 games with 5 or more hits is number 1 of all time.
6. 7 20 game hitting streaks or longer which is all-time record.
7. 17 seasons with 600 or more at bats.
He bet on baseball. Who cares? There are drug users and players that beat their wives in the hall of fame, but since he bet he is banned. Bartlett Giamatti banned Pete because to make a name for himself too bad he died that same year.
Everyone that played baseball knows what a Pete rose is. It is sliding hard into a base going head first. Charlie Hustle should and will be in the hall of fame.
Added because some of you know nothing about baseball!
No one would even know who Giamatti was unless he made a run at Rose. Fay Vincent would of reinstated Rose, yet he was best friends with Giamatti. Vincent sucked because of the 1990 lockout which inturn hurt baseball. There hasn't been a decent commisioner since Kuhn. Selig turned his head on steriods so he blows as well. Torrie is a horrible coach. He has the highest payroll in baseball best players and gets smoked every year. Marlins had a 50 million dollar payroll and Yankees had a 150 million plus salary. Marlins unfortunatley won the CHAMPIONSHIP!
Outs. Rose had 17 seasons with 150 games played over his record 24 year career. The man is in the top 5 of all-time. Go to his website and see the stats which is what the HOF is all about. There is no more integrity in baseball.

Pete Rose never intentionantly lost a game or managed a lose on purpose. yea he bet on baseball but he was a great player. Does Michael Jordan or Charles Barkley not belong in the NBA Hall of Fame? No they are going to get there so Rose deserves it as well as "Shoeless" Joe Jackson

Let me preface this by saying I strongly dislike the Reds and more strongly dislike Mr. Rose. That said, you have to compare apples to apples here, no apples to oranges as the saying goes. Torre, future hall of famer you say? - well, that is correct indeed. Joe Torre will be in the hall of fame as a MANAGER, not as a player. Randolph? I'm not sure how he fits into this argument. Anyhow, if Torre was to bet on games, as a manager, then he should never be allowed in because he wasn't good enough as a player and broke the law as a manager. What avenue could he use to get in? He couldn't. On the contrary, Pete Rose has more hits than any player. I think this should get him into the hall of fame as a player. After all, what if Pete Rose died after his record breaking hit? We would have elected him to the Hall of Fame, right? Because we would have never know what kind of piece of crap he really is...

Pete Rose is one of the best hitters in basball history, setting the all-time hits record in his day. He also worked hard for every one of those, his hustle beating out infield throws and stretching singles into doubles.
That said, what he did was unforgivable, even if he never bet against the Reds. As the manager he could make decisions that are good for one game but bad for the team (such as sending in the closer for the fourth day in a row, or inserting an injured star to pinch hit). Even baseball, so tolerant of cheating with steroids, sign-stealing, or black stuff on Kenny Rogers, knows that gambling is unaccaptable. The example of the Black Sox and Shoeless Joe Jackson stands in time as a monument to where the line is drawn.
Rose himself agreed to a lifetime ban from baseball, and that needs to be upheld. But that ban expires when he dies, and the day it does baseball should hold a special election to honor one of the greats.

I think he should be in the hall but he accepted the ban so he has no gripes coming. I think in a way it's unfair to keep guys out for what happened off the field. I mean Ty Cobb killed two guys and is in as he should be. Maybe after he dies the veterans association will get him in but not likely Joe Jackson still isn't in the hall either.

This is actually a simple answer. He belongs in the HoF because he is one of the best baseball players EVER! There are very few players that have the stats that "Charlie Hussle" had. And the HoF is all about your accomplishments ON THE FIELD, not off. So what if he bet on baseball.....so what if he bet on his own team, all of that is off the field, and after he was not playing.
Let me throw you a question in return, if Pete Rose doesn't belong in the HoF, why are the 1909 Black Sox, minus Shoeless Joe (the only one not throwing the game), in the HoF?

Because beside the fact that he bet on baseball, he was a very, very good baseball player and should be in the Hall of Fame based on that. That is what makes him special.
