I have been working on cleaning a house where an old lady died. She was a pack rat and her house is full from floor to ceiling with crap. She no longer used any of the bedrooms because they were too full and instead only used the living room to sleep in.

She was incontinent and was too old to care about hygene.

The bathroom was full of urine soiled clothes and the sleeper sofa smelled unbelievably bad. All of this has been removed from the house, however the smells remain. STRONG!

Are there chemicals that will counteract the smell of human urine? I have previously treated cat urine with some success, but this is different - not an amonia smell.

I am concerned that the smell is in the subfloor and walls, not just the carpets and crap. This isn't a decomposing smell, just stale urine.

Any suggestions? A spray treatment would be ideal.

Yes, get to a home health store, those that sell medical supplies for the home. They have products that should help, but will not address smells in walls, carpets, etc. .

If the smell is in the floor, like vinyl, you might be better off replacing it. Same for the carpet If the stink is in the wood below, paint with Kilz product before putting down new flooring.

Kilz can also go over the walls to encapsulate the smell and then repaint walls and ceiling. You haven't mentioned kitchen....I pray it's not in the cabinets. Those could be painted same as walls, just a lot more work.

Sounds like quite a job.

Hope I never become like that lady.........so sad.

Its doubtful that actual urine is on the walls, its probably just odor. You may just have to wait for wall odors to fade. A new coat of paint will help. Now, for the floors, if you can't wash the odor out, you need to consider new carpeting and/or linoleum. It could probably use an update anyway. If the odor is in the subflooring, there are chemicals you can put on the spots that will eat the enzymes in the urine, and they will get rid of the smell. Then, before you put down carpet, call around a find some incorrectly mixed paint (so its really cheap,) or a habitat for humanity store for cheap paint, and paint the subfloors. This will make them where they won't get water damaged if you have a leak sometime, and it will keep your subfloors from absorbing spills and such. Don't be concerned about color of paint, as it will be covered with your floor covering and never seen.

vinegar. It will smell strong for some time like vinegar, but I'd rather smell that than pee. Good luck to you sounds like you'll need it.
