There are three species and two sub species of manatees.

Amazonian Manatee - Trichechus inunguis
West African Manatee - Trichechus senagalensis
West Indian Manatee - Trichechus manatus

Sub-Species:
Florida Manatee - Trichechus manatus latirostris
Antillian Manatee - Trichechus manatus manatus

The West Indian Manatee is the species that is endangered in the US which includes the two subspecies.

HOWEVER they just ended a five year review of the species they are suggesting to move them from endangered to threatened. Official word has yet to go through yet.
