I am no car person so any kind of help would be nice. Given, my car is old (1995) Corolla, it's got a mile count of 230,000+... I just gave it a radiator flush and oil change. Everything else about it came up ok but that HC. Are there usual causes for this? I want to learn!

With an HC count that is that close I would concentrate on the ignition system. Put a set of plugs in, maybe a set of wires. Just get a good tune up and you should pass. Most tune up shops will be able to pre test to see what the HC count is. Also make sure your car is FULLY warmed up for the test.

your other answerers are right also make sure your ac is off when you go through and the car is not overheating timing is not adjustable on most cars so i would do plugs and wires.

If your car is that old with that many miles, your catalytic converter may need to be replaced.
