Did away with tipping. What if we paid waiters a normal hourly wage and didn't have to tip. Do you think we would be money ahead to take a small increase in our prices at places we would normally tip. Or do you think its better to leave prices the way they are and pay an extra few dollars at the end for tipping.

To leave a tip for the waiter/waitress wouldn't be so bad...
if they got to keep it...but they must turn it in to the restaurant
managment...and get only a small bit of it back! Which
means I have to pay handsomely to the restaurant and tip them too....The waiter/ waitress for the most part is working
only at minimum wage or just slightly above...and the
boss is robbing them blind.....! However, if you're looking
for a way to 'be money ahead'....stay home and use your
own kitchen and dining room.

I really have no idea where other people are coming from. I receive many services for which I don't "tip" -- I don't tip cashiers, people who help me find things in the stores, etc. I say just pay an hourly wage. I really don't care that much that i wouldn't be able to "punish" the bad waiters by not leaving a tip -- that's what talking to the manager is all about.

The whole purpose of a tip is to ensure that you get good service. If the server were paid not matter what service he/she gives then what motivation does that server have to give good service. A tip is just about the best weapon customers have against poor service (other than making a scene with the manager).

I see where you're coming from, but I think it'd be a bad idea. A good tip can work wonders for your server's attitude the next time he/she sees you! Think about it - if the hourly pay was the same regardless of level of service provided, what would be a waiter/waitress's motivation to provide prompt, courteous service?

I think the prices would be entirely to high. Many small restaurants would be forced to close. We would lose many, many good servers because actually they wouldn't be paid enough despite the wage increase. Let's just keep tipping.
