Really in just depends on the type of flower/veggie

The best thing to do is to go to your local flower nursery. The different types are labeled by how much light they need, soil, water, etc.

Also ask a nursery employee, because where you live will depend on what type of plant you should by.

Surf the web. Put in where you live and flowers (Ex.: Flowers for south texas)

Good Luck! (P.S. One flower that grows nicely in shade are impatiens (spelling?.)

Hostas are great in the shade, and with different varieties, they look beautiful! Also great shade plants:
*Rhododendron (daybreak, blue danube)
*Impatiens wallerana
*Viola x wittrockiana
*Hedera helix
*Ajuga reptans
Good luck! :)
