its not limited to snakes and cats. alot of animals have slit like eyes to allow them to see in the dark. also alot of other animals have a hiss like sound, even some bugs like cicadas.

Science will tell you that mammals evolved from the reptiles ergo the eye trait. I believe that due to their nocturnal nature the cats kept the nictatating memrane due to their sensitivity to light. i don't believe there is any reason to suspect that the hiss has a connection
