It depends on how many files you want to archive, and how you may retrieve the files later.
I say, the easiest way is to simply copy all the files into a large external hard drive or dvd (hardware is cheap, managing the backup software could be a headache).
Be sure to get a hard drive large enough to store all your files, plus room to grow.

A thumb drive is easily rewritten, if you want that sort of thing...For permanently available backups (like, say, a history, with fond old memories of the way things used to be) I use Roxio (but you could use any ol' appropriate piece of software) to burn a CD of the files. I periodically create a folder, whose name includes the date of the files to be archived (like, say, archive_05_29_07) then copy the target files to that folder, then burn that folder to the CD. and place that folder in a cabinet I have for such archives...

Depends on the size of the files...
1. Zip them up using Winzip or windows Zip
2. Back them up to a CD (cap. 700 MB) or DVD (if you have a dvd writer (cap. 4700 MB) )
3. If they are small enough (under 1 GB) back them up to a USB key
4. If they are very large then buy a external USB hard drive and back it up to that.. It's more expensive but it is also one of the best forms of backup /archive

External hard drives these are so cheap and so big, you can afford to have all your old files transferred over onto one and this way, you will have immediate access to all your documents. All you would need is cataloging software that will index your drive to make individual items easy to locate.
