..detectives and lawyers the first semester and prospectors the second one. But i don't really know what he means....how are detectives and prospectors different??

I think that he probably wants you to be open to learning new things. You should keep your eye out to see if anything interesting or strange stands out at you (detective). Then, if anything does stand out, you should be prepared to defend your ideas (lawyer). This will teach you how to read/understand history. The next semester you will already be familiar with what you are doing. You already know that there is probably some gold (interesting info) out there. Now you just have to find it and present it (prospector). This exercise will thus make you rich in knowledge.

Well detectives are people that solve cases and prospectors are people that look at things, my answer isnot exzactly right so look up the meaning on the dictionary and you'll notice.

detectives discover various " facts " and lawyers try to prove or disprove the " facts " in order to defend or prosecute their clients.

prospectors are in search of gems, minerals, such as gold, silver in order to obtain wealth for themselves.

detective: a police officer who investigates crimes.
prospector: an explorer who looks for valuable minerals and gems.
