They're the best piece of furniture next to a comfy sofa, in front of your TV set. If the ottoman is kinda fluffy, the better :)
Now, if you talk about the Ottoman empire, c'mon: they spanned three continents, controlling much of Southeastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Ottomans began to see themselves as the rulers of a "Universal Empire" and heirs to both Roman and Islamic traditions, hence "unification of cultures". With Istanbul as its capital, the Ottoman Empire was in some respects an Islamic successor to earlier Mediterranean empires — the Roman and Byzantine empires. In a few words: they knew how to build up and maintain an empire. Sadly, as with many others, they eventually fell.

They were a very powerful empire. As most governments of their time they were very autocratic. It is a very good example of combining church and state. Islam spread farther by the Ottomans than by anyone else. From Europe to China they spread their religion. Those not willing to go along were torchered or killed. Sort of like the Dark Ages and Christianity in Europe.
