Opening scene: A sleepy Kansas town in the 1870's:
Duncan McLeod rode into town, scanning his surroundings. Topping 6 feet, he knew he rode 1. Tall in the saddle and could not keep his appearance a secret. After all, many of his former paramours had told him he was 4. The handomest man this side of Jupiter.
But today, he had a job to do, no matter the risk. He felt he was 5. An honorable man in a dangerous land, even if he was bent on destruction. But the person he sought was far more dangerous than anything else in this dangerous place -- a killer rampaging throughout the centuries. Maybe this time, he would finally corner this other immortal and end the search.
As he approached the stable to rest his horse, he sensed the near presence of that immortal. He whirled, katana drawn from beneath his duster, poised and ready. The girl behind him yelped loudly. His lightening reflexes prevented him from seriously hurting her, thankfully. As a gray-haired man hurried up with a black bag, he heard her mutter under her breath: 3. "It's only a scratch, Doc. Geez, don't go telling Matt!"
But Doc did not like the looks of this ominous stranger with the sword gripped in his hands. He sent Festus over to the marshall's office, who was not long in responding to the alarm. He confronted Duncan, exclaiming: 2. "I'm the law in this town, mister -- and what I say, goes -- so go!"
Duncan was not convinced -- he had a mission to complete and needed to pursue it. He stepped forward, to brush by Matt -- and found himself sitting stunned as a shovel suddenly descended on his head! Looking around dazedly, he heard a shrill, female screaming: "Don't you DARE try to hurt my sweet Matt Baby!" Chagrined, Duncan just smiled, painfully stood up and bowed his apologies and good-byes to all. As he climbed back onto his steed and wheeled it around to leave, he heard a rich baritone voice exclaim behind him: 6. "Sunshine loves me.....Pip pip and doodly do!"

Matt Dillon rode into Dodge at about four o'clock, riding tall in the saddle as always. The ladies shopping at McFee's General Store watched him go by. "Isn't he the handsomest man this side of Jupiter!", one exclaimed. He dismounted and, tying his horse to the hitchrail, climbed the steps to the board sidewalk. Crossing it, he entered hhis Sheriff's Office, and found Doc Adams waiting for him.
Doc greeted him. He knew his friend to be an honorable man in a dangerous land, and objected whenever Matt dismissed a newly-acquired wound saying, "It's only a scratch, Doc." He liked it better when Dillon would acknowledge, "I'm the law in this town Doc--that's why I'm edgy and careful." But what he liked best was when Matt went to see his woman, Kitty Russell, who owned the Long Branch, Dodges' finest saloon, whistling his habitual song whose lyrics said, "Sunshine loves me--pip pip and doodly do...Now she's waiting, so move over, give me room!"
