Go to any web site for a play publishing company -- the most popular are Samuel French, Dramatists Publishing, and Pioneer Plays -- and ask for a catalog. Most of these are divided into categories based on the number of characters beginning with 1-man shows, like The Belle of Amherst or Clarence Darrow, and going on to large cast plays and musicals. Our Town is not a small cast! But how small are we talking? Steel Magnolias is 6 women; all of the male characters in the movie are not in the play. Odd Couple is small and has two versions -- the original with Oscar and Felix -- and a female version with Olivia(?) and Felicia. We did 12 Angry Men with a mixed cast and called it We, the Jury.

Harvey
Wait Untill Dark
The Diary of Anne Frank
Redwood Curtain
I love Wait Untill Dark, it is suspense, with only a few characters, a complicated plot. It provides quite a challenge for the actor of the main character, because the main character is blind. It is also a movie with Audrey Hepburn as The Blind Woman. My class almost choose this one.
My class decided to do Harvey, which is hilarious. It got good reviews, we all loved it and our characters, it was a good play for our cast.
The Redwood Curtain would be a hard one since there are certain ethinicities of the characters and certain size requirements, but check it out, if you have the perfect people for the cast, this could be a really good one. We considered doing this one, too.
The Diary of Anne Frank is a bit bigger than the others but a very worthwhile one, educational and dramatic. We also considered this one.

This isn't really a short one, but "The Importance of Being Ernest" is a wonderful play, by Oscar Wilde. I would warn you, though, this is set in the late 1880's in England, and would require a lot of costuming, if you were to follow it.
