The very reason the first of these 'Baby On Board' signs came about, was because the emergency services (in the U.S.A., as it happens) DIDN'T check the scene of an accident thoroughly. A young child died in a wreck as a result. The grieving parents started making and handing out signs to families in their home town, in the hope of avoiding another similar tragedy. Nowadays of course, most people expect you to drive more carefully, just because of the sign. As if I'd be driving like an idiot anyway, eh?

These days, I see more of the window shades then I do the signs. But it used to really bug me that people put up the signs, that was until I saw a really bad accident, and since I'm a medical person, I had to stop. The mom was unconcious, 2 kids in the back seat. One seat had a broken strap from the accident, and the seat was laying down in the car with the kid still strapped in it, and the other kid was in an infant seat behind the drivers seat. The kids were both not hurt except for some scrapes and emotional trauma. But I can see how they can help when an emergency happens. They are still annoying though!!!

I agree completely that the newer cutesy ones are really quite annoying, but the people that say they alert the emergency services are quite right. Working for the ambulance service I knew a couple of occasions when these signs have saved lives. On one occasion a crew were treating an unconscious female and a crew member noticed the baby on board sticker, but no sign of a baby. However, alerted by the sticker they did a search and found the baby, still strapped into its car seat some feet away in the bushes. The baby was happily unharmed but may not have been noticed in the dark if they had not started to specifically look for it.

I have 1 in my car in the hope that people will see the sign and stay a safe distance away, not all people are this considerate but I live in hope. Also if I was unfortunate to be in an accident I would hope someone would see this sign and help my baby. My sign is slightly larger than a rear view mirror and is in the corner of the back window so it is unobtrusive and doesn't block my view. Shouldn't you be asking why do people have stickers covering their entire back window advertising what stereo system they have cos surely that type of adornment in a car is more dangerous, more annoying, more in your face than a little safety sign telling people there is a young child in the car. I'm sorry but get a life IT'S A STICKER!!!!

Ok pal. I can tell you are still single. When you get married and have kids, do you want people racing by your car when your daughter or son is inside? I think not.
Understand that people need to drive careful all the time. Perhaps the signs are a bit annoying, but if someone were to hit your car and your son or daughter were injured or killed, you would give anything to change the situation. Even put up a few annoying signs. Right???
When people see these signs they should slow down or at least be a bit more cautious, cuz it might be you who kills or injurs someone elses child.
Dont start ragging on parents who put up these signs too much. When you have children, your views will change.....dramatically.

These stickers are there to let emergency services that there was a chil on board in the event of an accident as firefighters etc could waste valuable time searching for a child on finding an empty child seat therefore these stickers should really be removed if the child is not travelling in the vehicle

I think originally they were meant to notify emergency workers that there was a baby in the car if the drivers were unconcious or worse. I know that It can be very hard on the emergency workers if they find a car seat in a car with no baby in it. They aren't sure if the baby was tossed from the car, or wasn't there to begin with. My husband spent over an hour once searching by the roadside, in ditches, in the treeline even searching for a body of a baby before the child was located with a relative. (Mom was Dwi and DOA) He came home very upset by the thought that the child could have been dead, too. You would be surprised a tthe number of people who don't secure their children properly in child seats.

To alert emergencies.
To stop people from tailgating.
People get extremely scared when my husband stops our car (gently of course our baby is inside) I grab the baby on baord sign and get out of the car and walk up to the people in the other car, I am a pretty crazy women and I am sure I come across that way. Plus the people get very embarassed while everyone is staring at me waving my sign in their face while they sit in their car and can't drive off because I'm standing in front of them.
PS I have only done this on side streets not on major roads or anything, too dangerous.

I do have a child and do NOT have (and never have had) one of those 'baby on board' stickers.
As there rarely seems to be a child actually in the car I think they can do more harm than good (emergency services in a accident thinking there is a child when there isn't etc); seem to give the driver carte blanche to drive like an idiot (especially in the overtaking lane on motorways) (I'll try not to start on my idiot driver rant...) and to park in the 'family' parking spots in supermarkets - oh look! must have forgotten the baby! but we'll still park here!
Though perhaps the family thought it would help initially - but it just remains there forever.

I'm guessing you don't have children then?
Because even if the drivers around them don't change their driving behaviour. As parents we are hoping that the people in this world really will pay attention and not attept to kill everyone in the car with their speeding and drink driving etc. We really DO hope that some jerk isnt going to sit up our *** when they see the sign. We are wrong of course. Because most people don't care about anyone but themselves. But just because certain things don't always work doesn't mean we are all going to stop trying for the rest of our lives to keep our children safe.
