The song supposedly was inspired by a drawing made by John Lennon's son Julian, according to John. However, at the time of the song's release, the Beatles were heavily into experimental drug use with their friend the late Timothy Leary, the LSD professor and advocate. Go figure!

I believe they must have been trippin' when they came up with the concept for the album, check out the outfits for Sgt. Pepper's... So many artists that produced great things in the 60's did so under the influence of one thing or another and I don't think it's any secret that the Beatles did as well. However, having come from 'old shool' backgrounds and having a certain class about themselves now, they will likely never admit to anything of the sort and will also likely forever evade answering any questions eluding to drug use, plastic surgery and anything of that sort if you get what I mean.

It wasn't about LSD per se, but Lennon certainly came up with the title based on the three letters just like Hendrix did with his song "The Stars That Play With Laughing Sam's Dice". Get it? STP and LSD - two 60's hallucinogenics and also two of Jimi"s favorites.

I read it was a picture that Julian drew and told John it was Lucy in the skies, thus John proceeded to write a song. Now the VH-1 drug years made mention to this, but highly disagreed to it and felt it was indeed about LSD.

Gee, how could anyone listen to the lyrics and think it was about LSD? Caleidoscope eyes, flowers growing incredibly high, how could this possibly be drug related?
