To save my septic system I heard of making a 4 x 4 hole and filling with rocks to let the water drain. Can I do that in my crawl space or should it be away from the house?

You might also want to check your state codes for engaging in such a practice. In my particular state, any such modification to drainage can result in a stiff fine from the DNR if discovered. Furthermore, when it comes time to sell your home, such modification will probably be discovered during inspection and will have to be changed to comply with code.

A properly operating septic system should have no issues with accepting normal amounts of washing machine drainage water.

Three cheers for you. Yes it should be away from your house. Is there any way you can use this grey water to water the landscape. Many public municipalities are seeing huge advantages in directing grey water for landscape purposes instead of filling up your septic system. All too often many septic systems fail just for that reason. Water from you washing machine can also be directed to help water the surrounding landscape.

It's called a french drain. For a washing machine I would advise making it larger than 4x4. Use a piece of plastic pipe for a container and fill it with rocks. Do not put it in the crawlspace. Keep the water away from the foundation.

All three posted answers are good. If you are still going to do it you need an anti siphon valve or an air gap around the drain hose. If not all the water will siphon out of the washer. One or the other needs to be installed at the end of the factory installed hose.
