I have gnats everywhere. There is nothing rotten like fruit or any vegatables. My house is clean. There is absolutely nothing to draw these things inside my home. I am talking thousands of them a day. They gather around my tea maker and die, they fall dead on my stove at night because I leave the overhead light on, & they get stuck in my ozone air machine. I clean my ozone machine daily because there are at least 30 in there dead everyday on the ozone plate. They fly around everwhere. Could it be because its so dry outside, because of no rain, or maybe one layed eggs in my house. Anyone who knows the cause of these things and what I can do to get rid of them, I would certainly appreciate any input.

I had this problem a couple years ago. Have you bought any plants in from the outside? Sometimes you can get these gnat-like bugs that have infested outdoor plants . If this is the case, you can go to your local garden store and get bug spray for the plant to kill them off, (you'll have to spray it often) however in the meantime they tend to multiply in closed moist places (i.e.small trash containers) It takes awhile to get rid of them but if you can find the source, you'll be on your way.

if there is no fruit in the house, the second most likely cause is interior plants.
if you have plants in the house you should mix a little dish detergent in some water. (1 teaspoon to about half gallon of water) and gently water your plants with this. make certain there is no standing water under the plants.
the dish detergent inhibits the gnats ability to fly and they die before procreating.
also make certain that your cats liter box is clean. dump everything, scrub the box, add fresh liter.
hope this helps.

Are you sure they are gnats? Fruit flies don't require *rotten* fruits and veggies... they love fresh ones, too. I agree with others who have posted that house plants could be your culprit. They can even set up housekeeping in your garbage disposal, which was where we had them one year.

I found out quite by accident an effective method of trapping them. One night I left a nearly empty wine bottle that I had not rinsed out on the counter next to the sink. It had just maybe 1/4" of wine left in the bottom. The next morning it was full of fruit flies. They seemed to be able to get in but not get out.
The flies drowned in the small amount of wine. (And I'll bet they were pretty drunk, too!)

I tried this again with fruit juice, and it didn't work nearly as well. They particularly seemed to love White Zinfandel, probably because it's sweeter ... they weren't too attracted to Chardonnay! I don't drink wine every day, but I keep a box of cheap White Zin in the refrigerator, and it works as fruit fly bait just as well as the more expensive stuff!

I'll bet they would like beer, but it might not be sweet enough.

Oh, it was also important that there be a slight amount of the wine on the lip of the bottle. I tried putting some into a bottle using a funnel, but the flies didn't enter that bottle. They need to be lured in, apparently.

Oh, one more important point. Make sure you and your guests never pour wine into a potted plant! Then you've got this fruit fly lure in your plant and it's hard to get it out!
