It sounds like your fish is sick. The grayness might not have anything to do with that though. I have an Oscar cichlid and depending on his mood, he can be a dark black with orange spots or a dull black with light, almost khaki colored with orange spots. The fact that the fish is having trouble swimming and is stuck near the filter is a bad sign. If I were you, I would take some of the water from your aquarium to a pet store and have them test it for you. My understanding is that most of them will do it for free.
Remember, if you were in a pet store and saw a fish that was swimming the way that you say yours is swimming, you wouldn't buy it. Why wouldn't you buy it? You would buy it because it was sick and will probably not last very long.
Well, you should get on the pet store thing as soon as possible. Good luck with your fish.

You may need a water change. If you have a petsmart, or maybe any other petstore, in your area, take them a sample of your water, and they can tell you what your levels are. As another person mentioned, if you have any other cichlids in the tank, it could be that this fish is getting bullied by the others, and the only way to cure that is to move the fish to another tank.

A 29-gallon tank with 11 cichlids sounds very crowded. different than that, it truly is hard to assert what killed the fish. The lacking components have been probable scavenged (by skill of alternative fish in the tank) after the fish died, so as that they do no longer let us know what led to the loss of existence.

Is there possibly another fish in the tank that is harassing your cichlid, that could cause it to hide near the filter and not eat much.If there are no signs of illness that's all I can think of.

Well I would say it is growing old or it's dying. Take her to the vet or the Pet store because I think they have little filters to put in the tank to help the fish out because it has this special med. in it to help the fish out.

what kind of cichlid? what kind of fish in the tank with it?
Could be harassement from other fish. Separate out or provide more hiding spots. Otherwise it will be killed.

a color change like that could be too high of ammonia levels. that will make fish look washed out color wise. when was your last quarter of a tank water change?
