Ignore the victimhood rhetoric, work hard, get educated, succeed, the reward? Not congratulations, instead a middle finger. I don't get it.

This situation is a throw back to the slave era and subsequent Jim Crow era. When will a well adjusted Afican American Man be accepted in his own commuinity? In the white , asian and hispanic communities, being intelligent and doing well in school is something that everyone wants. In the black community doing well in school is not considered cool. There is something very wrong with that.

I think other factors besides material wealth have to be reviewed...

My whole family is upperclassed to wealthy, mostly. But we belong to black organizations, as well as white, and love and accept ourselves.

For example, our last family meeting we had catered with the hippest sushi restaurant in town. Beside the sushi? Traditional black Southern food.

We are mostly all black people and we give money and time to local, state, and national charities, as well as churches. We belong to black churches and the Roman Catholic church.

We understand that we can have success and associate and love other people, but without sacrificing self love and association.

Now, some of the well off black people I see today want nothing to do with other black people, including their own relatives. They are hateful, and stereotype other black people as much as say a Klansman or the average non black person.

I have had to tell many of these people off (in a nice middle classed sort of way, but that is what it amounts to).

I was at a chain restaurant recently with coworkers for lunch, and I was alone with my daughter. My husband was at work.

The negative commentary from the next table was horrible. They had all kinds of comments they thought I couldn't hear because once they realized I was black, they thought I was a "baby's mama". And I don't see anything bad about a young woman with her child, but people do.

I went over to the next table to tell them that I was indeed married, showed them my platinum engagement ring, and explained how all the things they said were first of all not good grammar.

They were shocked and were really ready to apologize when I got into my Jaguar, but I told them they hated their own people and they were not perfect either.

There is such a thing as an Uncle Tom and education and money doesn't have anything to do with it.

There's always going to be someone around trying to break you down, regardless of skin color. If you're educated, successful, and confident, those middle fingers should roll off of you like water off a duck's back. Let the congrats from your family, friends, and other people that matter in your life be the pat-on-the-back you're looking for.

They are not! you are MISUSING the term Uncle Tom! Uncle Toms are blacks that sell out their own race for whites. There is nothing Uncle Tommish about having a education, successing in life.

The sad thing is that they're insulting their own race. Rather than gladly embracing the successes of their own, they say things like 'You're an Uncle Tom'. In essence saying, if you're not a victim, if you're not poor and uneducated, you can't be black. Why would any group of people want to claim that? It's ridiculous and unfortunately, it is what keeps them down collectively. I hope for all of the people who turn against anyone for succeeding, that they realize what they're doing and begin to follow the example of those who have moved forward in a positive way.

I would not call my fellow black person an uncle tom for educating himself or getting a good job. What i call an uncle tom is one that sells out on his own people to help out a white man... The same uncle tom who would rather employ white folk, than his own... The one who makes it big time and drops his long term sister for a 'trophey' white woman...The one who runs behind the white man kissing *** and stepping all over the rest of us in the progress. Why is it everytime black people try to put up a stand and ask questions, were told we have a chip on our shoulder? Maybe you left a big chip on our shoulders when we were forced as your slaves. Or maybe we don't call each other such names. Maybe it's the white man again, giving us the ammuntion to self destruct ourselves- as usual. And we 'uncle toms 'that are making them happy by doin just that....

They are rewarded in other ways. Approval is not one of the rewards.
