I have a lot of compassion for people. And I genuinely feel for people who are in difficult situations whether I've been in those situations or not. But what makes me not feel as badly for people is if they don't try to do anything to help get themselves out of difficult situations.

Not necessarily, although it certainly helps to relate to others' experiences having had the same.
When I see scenes of war or natural disasters (the tsunami in Asia several years ago now , Hurricane Katrina) or starvation (like Darfur) or of children anywhere suffering -- none of which I have ever actually experienced, it just tears me up.

Yes I do. Because I've been there, I understand how the person is feeling. If I can't help in any way, I feel really down

Yes, I do. I'm very empathetic and I feel awful for some people and really wish I could help them.
