Two thirds of the island of Montserrat, a British territory, has been evacuated due to volcanic activity. In 1902, the city of Saint-Pierre on Martinique was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Pelée. The Italian cities Pompeii and Herculaneum are famous for having been destroyed by Mount Vesuvius nearly two thousand years ago. The modern city of Naples sits directly in the path of any future eruption.

The whole globe is affected by volcanoes. There are cities like Seattle and Portland here in the US that would be in big trouble if Mt. Ranier or Mt Hood, respectively, went off.
