Do you have any fish in there? That may help out a little and you don't have to pay for them, depending on where you live. In San Diego County, they have a mosquito fish program that you can get them free from anyone that sells pond supplies, feed or some pet stores have them.
I also agree with the shade part, it's the sun that is causing the alge to bloom and the shade will keep that down.
Depending on how you want to care for your pond (chemical or natural) you can use something as simple as putting straw at the bottom (which will help it stay clear) or test the water constantly to add chemicals. Sometimes, a little bleach wil help, but I would only add a teaspoon per 5 gallons if you have plants in there.
Good luck, I hopt this clears it for you.

You can fix this by two methods. Carp or large goldfish will thrive in this type of atmosphere along with other water conditioning fish and a filter system.
The filtration system can be homemade using aquarium filter material, charcoal, a water pump and a five gallon bucket.
If you do this to your pond you will be amazed at how nice it will look is just a month or two.

I am new to this, but this happened to me. You definitely need a fountain/pump. The water needs to go through a filter that you will find at pond or landscaping stores. GET ADVICE! This is not an easy job and it will happen again if you do not do it right.

Provide total complete all covering shade over the water. No direct sun light at all. May be you can think of a removable shade which you can take away when you are using the pond.
Light is what attracts the organisms that color your water

try nutribiotic gse. its a grapefruit seed extract. you can find it at your local health food store. you may want to drain and clean your pond first if possible. you will have to experiment with the amount of gse you use. you can go on the nutibiotic website for more info.
