no doubt the ram
you should get 1gb it will make your computer soar, and just so you know ram has to come in pairs, so you can just buy another 256. if you buy 2 x 512mb it will be great and these are veryy inexpensive. for about 40$ you could find cheap ram. look on newegg.com for the ram that fits your motherboard. a problem with upgrading the video card is that it may not hold your power supply. you need to check because for my new dell optiplex computer which is very advance it only came with a 305 watt power supply, so i could get the x1950 pro.
the ram is your best bet...but if you are going to upgrade might as well spend another 15$ and get 1gb

Definitely more RAM first, but don't waste money on another 256mb, get an additional 512mb. Unless you're running an old operating system like (Windows 2000 or Windows 98) you'll need at *least* 512mb of memory to run smoothly. These days most systems should have 1gb standard, and your motherboard will certainly be able to accept the larger chips.
Since you've got a PCI-Express slot, there are plenty of options available to you for upgrading the video card later. But any programs or games that might require a better video card would choke on the paltry 256mb of RAM first.

RAM hands down. I'm guessing you want to use this for gaming eventually. Another 256MB will make a significant difference in the performance of your PC but it's still not enough for gaming. DDR is old technology and is getting more and more expensive. I suggest you try to look for two used 512MB ram if you want to save money. You'll see a huge difference in performance especially in gaming. Then, get the video card. A good PCI-E video card could be had for less than $200. Check out www.newegg.com

Video card runs directX and 3-D fashions, directX being the made of microsoft, additionally concerning to activeX. The memory on the cardboard determines the clock, or velocity, that it may comprehend directX, and the cardboard basically serves to technique greater complicated 3-D shapes. as long as you have a direct9x or 10x compliant 512 mb video card, you're able to desire to not have a lot of a issue. Your ram bargains with accessible pool memory, which source video games use a lot of. in case you probably did not have adequate, the recreation could crash. Your processor is what fairly concerns while it involves velocity and performance. there's a worldwide of distinction between a duo and a Pentium 4, fantastically while working a recreation with as plenty physics and on-visual exhibit unit element as l4d.

RAM! 256 MB of Ram was good for Windows 98 but now days it's just plain slow! I would add atleast another 512 MB of ram to the 256 you already have. You can get the exact model of your RAM by going to http://www.crucial.com Then upgrading your video card would be the next step in getting your computer up to snuff. Good Luck HTH.
Edit: The only RAM you have to buy in pairs is RDRAM or Rambus Ram. You can buy different sizes of memory they will just not work in Dual channel mode.

Best thing to due is upgrade the ram, your operation should house about a gig worth of memory. ATI video cards will only slow down your processing. You would also check what compatability your system(motherboard) can take. I once blew a computer trying to install a better video card.

More ram all the way, with 256mb you can hardly do anything now and if you wait longer the computer will have trouble doing everything beyond the basic use. My vote is to definitly buy more ram it will speed up your pc if your doing basic use. If your gaming you need both more ram and a new video card.

Running Windows xp or Vista you should be running a minimum of 1GB of Ram. The video card should only be updated if you are creating something graphically. But the overall performance of your pc will be better with a Ram upgrade.

I hate it when people think you need a ton of ram! YOU DONT!
you are probably using your built in graphics on your motherboard, that uses your system ram, definitely get a new graphics card, but i would not recommend an ati card, get an Nvidia card, i would get the Geforce FX 5200 or a Geforce 256 mb card. see your performance afterwards. if you still want more ram just get another 256 mb stick, but you should never need more than 512 mb, that is why Vista is so fuc*ing ridiculous.
