and the ones who have a high precentage of best answers, do they search through the thousands of questions looking for ones that have not being answered by anyone, then answering them with anthing that comes to mind, thus guaranteeing a best answer for themselves

Yes- I think top contributors do have too much time on their hands. I never thought about the scrolling thing and that is an interesting theory- but I think they just answer what they know to be helpful or what they can come up with as far as a witty answer, and for some- being a know-it-all validates them.
But-----there will always be someone who has the most points, the best advice, the most knowledge, or the most number one answers- there has to be someone.
This is like chatting with someone and the one question and one answer is the end of the chat- great for people like me with A-D-D or short attention span theatre!!

Probably! I have too much time on my hands, as I trade stocks for a living and sort of just have to watch and wait sometimes. And somehow this question and answers thing came up on my screen. Since then I have answered about 8 or so questions over the past few hours and last night. It's really not a great way to pass time. But it's fun for now!
I can't respond to the second part, because I don't know what other peoples' motives are for answering questions. I suppose some people answer trying to get the best answer recognition, which I think is a silly goal. But they are probably just having some fun too.

Definitely. Top Contributors, get a life. And for the ones who are stay at home mothers, how do you spend so much time on the computer with kids at home. When I am home with my kids I don't have time for it. The only reason I am on the computer now is because I am at work and have nothing better to do. I have already finished with all my work and no, my empoyer doesn't have a problem with it. I definitely will not waste my time with the computer when I get home. I will spend it with my husband and kids.

YOU ARE PROBABLY RIGHT ABOUT SOME OF THE CONTRIBUTORS, BUT IN MY CASE,SINCE THE DEATH OF MY DAUGHTER I CANNOT SLEEP. I 50 AND HAVE BEEN THRU ALOT OF LIFE EXPERIENCES AND IF MY MISTAKES OR GOOD CHOICE CAN HELP SOMEONE ELSE THAN THATS WHAT I AM TRYING TO DO.
I JUST GO TO THE MAIN QUESTION LIST AND ANSWER THE ONES THAT I CAN HONESTLY TALK ABOUT FROM KNOWLEDGE OR EXPERIENCE.
IF I DONT KNOW THE ANSWER OR KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE TOPIC, I DO NOT ANSWER AT ALL.
AND YES SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST BEING STUPID AND DO HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS.

Top contributors may consider this to be a good hobby and as such put a lot of time into it. If you con not or do not choose to do so you should not knock them. It seems if you do not like this operation you should find something else to do with your time. Not to get upset over my statement it was just an idea.

The amount of time that constitutes "too much" is subjective.
It is a matter of individual judgment or discretion. Therefore, people only have "too much time on their hands" if they are not using their time in a manner which they feel they need to or should.
