Yes the verb is "was". I would say it is intransitive because it is doing nothing. to explain. A Transitive verb does something to the object of that verb eg "The boy kicked the ball." Intransitive - "The boy ran home." Hope this helps.

As the rule goes 'was' is an intransitive verb.
In this case too 'was' is in the main clause.
And it does not have an object in the subordinate clause.
SO IN THIS CASE 'WAS' IS AN INTRANSITIVE VERB
