was the cut away it showed of some guys beating him to death the real way he died? I'm confused on that part cuz I've heard the beating part was all in Ennis's mind, it's the way he imagined Jack's death or did he really die from the tire / rim accident the wife mentioned in the movie?

I think it's been deliberately left up to your imagination. No one really knows what happened to Jack, but Ennis believed he was killed, hence the cut away. I personally think that he was killed too.

Since that kind of death was something Ennis witnessed in his childhood, I believe he visualized that when Jack's wife was telling him. I think it's deliberately left up to the viewer to ponder the events and wonder how Jack really died.

You would have to refer to the author of the short story. The movie was vague, however Jack seemed to die by being beaten to death. His wife covered for him with a tire exploding, but that would not have been a reasonable conclusion. It is my opinion that Jack was killed by thugs and that is how I conclude the way of his death. I doubt even the author of the story line could tell you differently. I think it was meant to be obstructive and in the hands of the viewer or reader. I doubt we will ever know for sure.

I'm pretty sure he was beaten to death for being gay, and his wife just told the story of the accident because she was humiliated by the truth.

I think it was in reference to the Laramie, WY beating. That's my thought anyway. I'd imagine that's how he died.
