It doesn't. Most capital crimes are either a) not planned in the sense that they result from some OTHER planned crime (robbery, etc) going wrong; OR b) they occur in an emotionally charged situation where very little thought goes into the murder. Remember, "premeditation" in the law can occur in seconds.

It doesn't. Homicide rates are higher in states with the death penalty than in states without it. (Sources below.)

To deter others, a punishment must be swift and sure. The death penalty is neither.

Some people suggest that the process should be speeded up. However, if you look at the list of the 124 innocent people sentenced to death, you will see that many had already served well over a decade. Greater speed will guarantee the execution of innocent people.

Life without parole is on the books in 48 states. It means what it says and it is swift and sure. It also serves to incapacitate a criminal (prevents him from reoffending.) It costs much less than the death penalty.

It very rarely does, if it all. Criminals aren't sitting there thinking, "oh no, after I blow this guys head off I might get the chamber."

Some crime victims have asked that perpetrators be sentenced to life, but are completely ignored. This shows that the penalty is less and less for individual victims and more for society.

THANK YOU i've been saying that for years! if they for example want to charge a mob boss for ordering the assassination of how ever many people what is the difference from a judge that sends so many people to the death penalty? is it because a serial killer derives pleasure from what he does? does a judge not have a smirk when he sentences human garbage to be punished for they're crimes?
