He burned Atlanta almost to the ground and left a path of destruction from Atlanta to Savannah Ga. While one may not agree with the South in terms of Slavery I think that to the north they did not care about slavery or blacks as much as they did keeping the union to gether. Sherman himself was a very racist person that cared little for the blacks he encountered during his destruction of Ga. . From a Military stand point he was an intelligent and ruthless leader which was needed to the South he was a murderer and should not be remebered by any civilised person.

He was the union general who is credited with capturing Savannah and causing the confederate army to split in two.
