Tropical fishes can be divided into three kinds.
1. Tropical freshwater
2. Tropical brackish
3. Tropical marine.
Guppies are tropical freshwater fish.
Athough guppies are fresh water fishes they do well if some salt is added to the water.
In order to keep them you should follow these steps for the water:
1. Use tap water and add water conditioner (which contains anti-chlorine, heavy metal chelating agents) according to the manufacturers intructions. I recomend TetraAqua's AquaSafe.
2. Add salt 1 tablespoon per 5 gallons of water
3. Use gravel which is marble based/calcareous as guppies like hard alkaline water.
Since they are tropical fishes they need a heater. The aquarium that you keep them in should have a heater set to about 26oC.

Guppies are freshwater tropical fish . . . as opposed to saltwater tropical fish or brackish tropical fish. So they do need to be heated unless you are in a place where the ambient temperature never gets below 72 or 75F (22-25C). But heaters are relatively cheap ... so why not be safe.

As posters have metioned, tropical is the temperature, freshwater is the type of water. Guppies need heaters and like the water to be around 76-78F.

They're tropical and will need to be heated.
The best thing about Guppies is that they shoal. So if you have a big enough tank with enough fish they move in unison. Beautiful!!

Tropical. Obviously freshwater in native hot climate. But tropical if you want to keep them yourself you need a tropical tank. (and they are not marine fish).

They are considered tropical fish.
They can live at 64-82F.
As long as your house is kept at a steady temperature higher than 64F, it won't need a heater.
They are considered freshwater, but are really brackish.
Brackish means more salt than freshwater, but less salt then sea water.
They will live in water with no salt though.
