I think the only way that gun control will reduce crime is to stop manufacturing guns altogether. The vast majority of crimes commited with firearms are by individuals who obtained their weapons illegally. In my opinion, the laws for obtaing a firearm in the first place are strong enough. I am from MN and to get a handgun you have to first apply for a permit to purchase with the local police department, they will do an extensive background check on you. Then when you go to buy, your name is run through the FBI.
However, I do think that there may be more we can do to help agencies have more info on peoples mental health staus. The incident at Virginia Tech comes to mind. This guy was supposed to be commited. A judge ordered this and no one in the court system followed up to make sure that he actually went!!! There should have been some red flags raised when he went to purchase his weapons.

Yes it has been proved that Communities that stop Criminals and the insane from having them, crime is reduced. Get rid of Illicit drugs and drug addicts and Crime will reduce dramatically.....Criminals can be Stopped and Controlled! Those who are insane and cannot be cured, should be placed in Institutions for the Criminally insane forever, like NAMBLA...Criminals always find ways of having them! Law Abiding Citizens, properly trained can Defend and protect themselves, families and property, according to the Fourth Amendment of the Bill of Rights. Anything less is Obstruction of Justice....

No.
If you want examples of how stict gun control actually increase crime, just look at school shootings. Those places have a TOTAL BAN on guns and are nothing but killing fields. Notice the mass shootings do NOT take place in police departments or on military bases.
Reference #1. The Lott Study, University of Chicago, IL
Economists John Lott and David Mustard examining the impact of concealed carry permits found that:
* Concealed handgun laws reduce murder by 8.5 percent, rape by 5 percent and severe assault by 7 percent. ""
Reference #2. "More Guns, Less Crime" by Lott.
Reference #3. Link below. Views out of South Africa totally uninfluenced by the NRA or Brady Bunch.
Reference #4. Link below. Rutgers Law Review
Reference #5. Link Below. National EDucational Association. This was included to show you how gun grabber groups "cook" their facts in in definitions. For example, they will say "school age children ages 5-19"). Then they give a figure of how many killed by guns but DO NOT break it down as to why. They do not tell you the MAJORITY of these teen deaths are that of teens no longer in school and the deaths were gang/drug/crime related. They DO NOT tell you how many of these deaths were caused by police in stopping a criminal or in self defense. They DO NOT tell you how many of these deaths were caused by homeowners stopping a teen burgler. (I am surprised they have not tried to add in teen troop deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq as additional numbers of teens killed by guns.!)
Ciminals are NOT afraid of the justice system.
First, they do a crime and know they have over a 60% chance of not getting caught.
Second, if they do get caught, they know they can "lay down" and the cops will not shoot them.
Third, they know if caught, they often get released due to insufficient evidence or the prosecutor is over loaded.
Fourth, they know the prosecutor will offer a plea bargain in order to clear the case quicker.
Fifth, if they do go to trail, they may get off. Since they get a public defender, they figure they may as well try it.
Sixth, even if convicted, all that happens is they get sent to prison and can network with their buddies.
They are not afraid of the justice system. What they are in great fear of is an armed victim. The victim suddenly has the ability to defend himself, and because he is there and knows ALL of the facts, he is justified in defending himself. It is pretty hard for a criminal to argue with a piece of high speed lead headed his way. The fact that there are now more armed citizens out there able to defend themselves has reduced violent crime more than any "gun control" law ever could.

Hmmm...of course if by control you mean to limit good-minded and legitimate citizens right to bear arms...then no.
However, if you are talking about putting a little control of guns back into the peoples' hands, then yes.
Firearm education courses for the young. Target shooting as a high school physical education course. Proper and respectable use, care, and storage of firearms should be taught. People need to know not to fear firearms, but they need to know to fear people.
To many people today see a firearm, and think bad thoughts. What kind of stimuli have we given them to draw those conclusions? Those same people often can't identify a bad person by their expressions and body language - and that's where the actual trouble lies.

Just look at crime rates in other countries. Detroit is one of the most violent cities in the world but Canadian cities on the other side of the great lakes are very safe. They watch the same movies and play the same video games so what could be the difference. The data speaks for itself. Should we change our laws? I my opinion hand guns are unnecessary unless you are a police officer.

well yes it should in theory... but which system is fail safe? Has the constitution stopped all possible crimes? No..
No matter how elaborate the law gets there will always be loop holes and there will always be people who know people who can get guns with out the required documentation.... and there will always be lawyers who are waiting for language flaws in the law and they are fully aware of the scope of each and every law....

Of course it will reduce crime. For every criminal killed is one less criminal to continue to commit crimes. It's common sense. You don't need a web site to prove that.
Oh wait, you meant keeping the guns out of law abiding citizens hands. In that case no. It will only allow the criminals to murder unarmed citizens and they prefer it that way.

Criminals are, by definition, people who break laws. In fact the guns used are very often not legally owned by the criminal.
Making laws to stop people who have already shown complete disdain for the law seems kind of pointless.

Of course it would.
The USA has the highest rates of gun crime in the Western world. There are many times more murders in a small city in the US than there are in my country every year. The majority of them are gun related.
