Learn the order of operation. Group like terms together meaning numbers with letters go on one side of the equal sign and the same for just numbers. When it crosses the equal sign the + changes to - and vis versa.
a.3x-2=10
3x=2+10
3x=12
Now, you need to get rid of the 3 so you can solve for x.
Divide both sides by 3x.
x=4
4 is your answer.
b.-9-4x=11
4x=9+11
4x=20
x=5
c. 2y-8=2
2y=8+2
2y=10
y=5
d. 7z+16=58
7z=-16+58
7z= 42
Since 16 is a negative, you subtract. Remember 16 crossed the equal sign so the sign of 16 changes to -.
7z=42
z=6
1. A. 3x-11=9x+49
3x-9x=11+49
6x=60
x=`10
B. 9d+36=20d-8
9d-20d=-36-8
Since 36 and 8 are both - , you add.
11d=-44
d=-4
Good luck!

Question a)
3x - 2 = 10
3x = 12 (because 12 - 2 = 10)
x = 4
Question b)
- 9 = 11 + 4x (take 11 from both sides)
- 20 = 4x
x = - 5
Question c)
2y - 8 = 2
2y = 10 (because 10 - 8 = 2)
y = 5
Question d)

The trick is to bring all the unknowns (x,d,etc) to one side and the numbers to another side. To do that whatever you do to one side, do to the other. Ex: if you +5 on one side, you gotta do it to the other side, since it is an equation.

It is important to move variables to one side of the equation, while moving the constants to the other side. Through using simple math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division) you should simplify to lowest terms. Pay careful attention to positive and negative signs.

I use ACKUMS RAZOR not some math ritual. As the crow flies. The shortest distance. Life is too short to mess around with doing "stations at the cross" to solve a simple problem!
When did math become a religion!
No wonder I never understood it in school but got up to trig in computer programming work!
