If I went to a biography about a celebrity and edited a big lie into it, since anyone can edit the site, can I create a big celebrity gossip story on The Insider and Entertainment Tonight. For example, what would happen if I type "Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachet are getting back together"?

Wikipedia describes their response to this, which they call "vandalism" here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Vandalism
"Vandalism is any addition, removal, or change of content made in a deliberate attempt to compromise the integrity of Wikipedia. The most common types of vandalism include the addition of obscenities to pages, page blanking, or the insertion of bad (or good) jokes or other nonsense. Fortunately, these types of vandalism are usually easy to spot... Committing blatant vandalism, however, is a violation of Wikipedia policy; once it is spotted it should be dealt with accordingly — if you cannot deal with it yourself, you can seek help from others."
Wikipedia can block the IP address of repeat offenders of vandalism against the site. Also, the page history will generally be checked to see what other pages you have edited, and these will also be checked for vandalism.
Persistent and obvious vandals are reported to the site administrators. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrator_intervention_against_vandalism
This is also a pretty silly and immature thing to do. Wikipedia is a good resource, why would you want to wreck it? Do you post false answers on answers.yahoo?

Some of the pages are locked, so you might not be able to do that. But, most importantly, you would need to have someone (and probably more than 1 someone) read it, believe it, and actually start spreading it around. How likely is that?
