i put some ice on it, then it didn't hurt that much and i could walk around normally, today however i woke up and it feels a little sore and a little uncomfortable, esp at the back of the knee, and to the left of the kneecap

can someone offer suggestions as to what this injury may be, and how to treat it?

you probably hyperextended your knee which can do a lot of damage to your pcl and acl or you're just having problems with cartilage

I have this problem while playing Volleyball. There are a lot of the same movements. It sounds like you have a hard time with lateral movements and jumping. I thought may knees were bad so after many doctors and chiropractors telling me my knees were healthy, finally one chiropractor found the problem. One muscle on the leg is stronger than the opposite side. The usually the inside of the quad overworks the outside of the quad. What happens is the inside muscle fires first and pulls the knee cap over causing sharp pain and immobility. There are many exercises you can do to get your muscles working together to keep the knee cap in place. I would recommend going to a good physical therapist and asking them for exercises to strengthen the outside of your quads. I hope this helps.

I think you should get checked by an orthopedic doctor. Bending your knee backwards as you describe is one way to tear your ACL (and PCL)...not saying thats what it is, but you cant know for sure without being checked. In the short term rest it for a couple weeks and place an ice bag on the knee a couple times a day for 15 mins for the next couple weeks.

you could have pulled A muscle, a tendon or ligament. I think you need to get to your medical doctor and have this checked as soon as possible. There's no way anyone can tell you what you have by the internet. It has to be X Ray and examined in person.
