I was thinking of getting a 10 gallon guppy tank. It would only house males, I have a heater that would keep the water between 76-78F, a 10 gallon filter, and some live aquarium plants. How many male guppies could I keep in there with out overstocking the tank? I would also like to have some ghost shrimp in there too, so how many could I keep in there? This would be after I cycled it of course, and I would only add a few fish/shrimp at a time over a period of a month probably. In this tank set up, would ghost shrimp make much of a bio load difference?
Thanks in Advance!!!

I actually would be using a better filter (15 gallons+)

The filter would be a Tetra Whisper Triad 30, it works for tanks between 10-20 gallons.

Assuming you have a decent filter (and I know you would) I would say about 10-12 guppies and 4-5 shrimp. The shrimp add to the bio load as much as a small, low activity fish.

Sounds like a great plan. The general rule of 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water counts for the shrimp too. But this does not count tail size, just body mass. Assuming you are only using a filter for a 10 gallon tank (I tend to recommend always using at least 50% more filtration than what is called for per gallon to help with the bioload) then I wouldn't recomend more than 10 total guppies and shrimp combined.

Also, an excellent choice, guppies and ghost shrimp look great together and only tend to prey on the young of each other. If you are only planning male guppies, you won't have fry and it can be difficult to breed ghost shrimp anyway so it should be safe.

the rule of thumb is 1 inch of fish per gallon but because your filter is really good you might be able to get 12 or 13 instead of 10. ghost shrimp would not do much because they poop too, but they are fun and cute so i would get some anyway. you could get 4-5 ghost shrimp and then your tank would be maxed out.

well to begin with, it sounds like you have a good plan!
on average you could probably do good with about 6 fish.
However, though ghost shrimp look really cool they can become a food source for the guppies. This is not saying that it won't work, rather that guppies can be terrritorial and bother the shrimp to death.
You might also want to consider getting 2 alge eaters or cory cats for your tank...and no, you do not ned an abundnce of alge to feed them. They will eat regular fish food off the bottom of the tank. Good luck and have fun!

5 Ghost Shrimp would clean the floor very effectively, and then 8-10 guppies will add a lot of color to your tank without overstocking (assuming you have good filtration).

The most commonly suggested number is one inch of fish per gallon of water. Since a guppie is 1.5-2 inches normally, I would suggest between 5 and 7 fish.

You could put about 6 Male Guppies without it being crowded.
