I need help in knowing when and how to aerate my lawn. Some books say Autumn - is this the best time? Will I damage my lawn if I do it at another time?

Autumn is probably the best time as the only thing growing with your lawn during winter is the root system. Aerate and fill the holes with a coarse river sand mixed with blood and bone. Or, fertilise with a higher than normal phosphorous fertiliser (careful of leeching problems).

Autumn or spring, but if you want to do it now then go ahead, grass is very tough your unlikely to do it any great harm.
I have aerated lawns in mid summer and they have not come to any harm, after aerating fill the holes with coarse sand and give a little feed.

you will only have aeration holes each and every few feet. you would be exhausted attempting to aerate each and every sq. foot of the entire backyard. For a greater finished and thorough interest hire a plug aerator each and every few years. Or purchase a spike aerator, you ought to use them each and each month, it won't harm something. some landscapers use only spike aerators.

I aerate mine in March/April, then I brush washed sharpe sand in to the holes then sprinkle it with a mixture of john Innes No2 and grass seed. COmes up a treat, I would have noreason to suspect that this couldn't be done year round with exception of the seed and the hardness of the ground to be aerated

Autumn is supposed to be best, but spring is also good, at least the lawn is growing then. Check this link:
