I currently own a laptop, but it doesn't have the juice I need to run my software. I was thinking about buying a desktop. But, I hear that building my own PC can save me big bucks. Anyone know of a good, reliable website I can purchase my parts from? (I'm gonna have to have my buddy help me figure out what to do - I'm computer-hardware illiterate).

Also, are there any website that let you pick the parts, then they build it and ship it to you? Is that still cheaper than electronic store models?

If you can do software, then hardware is a cakewalk. I could teach a money all there is to know about hardware in a day. Pricewatch.com is a great site to find price comparisons, the only problem is some of the dealers aren't quite reputable. One place NOT to buy Ram from is Lian Dong Tech. They are bad about answering the phone and they barely speak english so it's almost impossibly to do a return when they send you a faulty part.

In this day and age you can order your computer custom made at just about any major brand dealer at a decent price. And if some of the parts are not to your content you can replace them at a later date. Just make sure that the part you buy will be compatible with the computer model you have.

UM DON'T! Building your own desktop is not cheaper.
motherboard with cor2duo processor $499.00
hard drive 80gb $100.00 +
cd/dvdrom starting prices $ 50.00 for a cheapie
A drive $ 25.00 to 50.00
OS $150.00
extras like cards reader and such 100.00 to 150.00+

now do you want to build one or call dell and have them build you one for about 300.00 cheaper.
I built my own about 3 years age and wish I had just called dell and ordered one I have about 1200.00 wrapped up in this thing now.

Try this:

The source of the parts are included. Just go to the next page if you want the Hot Rod.

I too would recommend newegg.com. as far as putting it together you can find many guides online to putting them together although its mostly plug and play when assembling it because the components are made to only fit in the slot they're made for and no other.

I think it is cheaper to buy one from Dell than to build one.
