Over time local usage has changed the way words are used.
New words for things come about sometimes by accident (someone mispronounces something or says it fast and people misunderstand and it catches on).

Even in Britian there are different words used for the same thing depending on what area you go to. That is something known as a dialect.

Our English is really a combination of all the languages of people who came here back in the 1700s and 1800s. So it's derived from German, French, Spanish, etc. etc. and of course British English.

your question should have been why is american english different from british english. if you are not american. because, british english is standard english.
